Remember, opposite-side street parking is in effect (and in da’ house)

While parts of CB6 are suspended due to clean up, all of CB7 (including Greenwood Hts.) alt. side parking streets are back up and running (no pun intended) so keep those cars where they need to be for each day, whether parked or double parked. A friendly reminder.

Repost UPDATE: Mayor Bloomberg Announces DSNY will begin recycling pick-up on Sunday

OK, so the City, in its wisdom, has done an about face on recycling…pick up starts Sunday. Info below.

Sanitation Resumes Recycling Collections on Sunday

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced today that it will resume storm delayed recycling collections of paper and cardboard, metals, plastic and glass on Sunday, November 11th.  Recycling collections on Sunday will start with regularly scheduled Saturday recycling.

Regularly scheduled Monday recycling will be picked up on Monday, November 12th, even though the day was originally scheduled as a holiday in observance of Veterans’ Day.

Well, we all have to sacrifice for the greater good, but it ought to be interesting when the first day of pick up happens. Read more on NYC Sanitation’s website.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced changes to refuse collections to ensure Department of Sanitation crews continue to provide 24 hour a day cleanup services to Staten Island, south Queens and southern Brooklyn to clean up storm debris.

The continued redeployment of personnel to meet storm cleanup needs will result in reduced refuse collection services in areas of the City that were not, or only slightly, impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Areas normally receiving three times a week collection may only receive two collections per week, while areas that receive two times per week collection may only receive one collection while the emergency debris removal work continues.

The heavily-impacted areas will continue to receive collection and debris removal around the clock. This morning, Mayor Bloomberg visited Sanitation Workers at the Edgemere Queens East 14 Garage in Rockaway to discuss their cleanup efforts.

Keeping it clean (and raccoon free)

OK, so the second part should NOT be the only reason for common sense when it comes to dealing with our collective trash and recycling.

Not to belabor an issue we ALL are very aware of in the community, but a few common sense things in dealing with trash, recycling and hopefully keeping our streets cleaner year-round and our masked bandits at bay during the warm months (need an example, check out this Tuesday’s fiesta):

  • Whenever possible, rinse out our non-recyclable containers before disposal
  • Bag all trash before it’s placed into the bins, never throwing raw garbage into the bins
  • Lining bins for the trash during the week (not just the night it goes out)
  • When needed (due to overly stinky garbage), double bagging on trash night
  • Never placing trash or unwashed glass/plastic into recycling containers
  • Clean up any spilled trash or recycling (it makes a huge difference, think of the broken window theory, or defense of it)

So enough with the common sense items. To get the official skinny, visit DSNY’s website. And new to the neighborhood and need to know your block’s collection days? Well then click here.
