Keeping it clean (and raccoon free)

OK, so the second part should NOT be the only reason for common sense when it comes to dealing with our collective trash and recycling.

Not to belabor an issue we ALL are very aware of in the community, but a few common sense things in dealing with trash, recycling and hopefully keeping our streets cleaner year-round and our masked bandits at bay during the warm months (need an example, check out this Tuesday’s fiesta):

  • Whenever possible, rinse out our non-recyclable containers before disposal
  • Bag all trash before it’s placed into the bins, never throwing raw garbage into the bins
  • Lining bins for the trash during the week (not just the night it goes out)
  • When needed (due to overly stinky garbage), double bagging on trash night
  • Never placing trash or unwashed glass/plastic into recycling containers
  • Clean up any spilled trash or recycling (it makes a huge difference, think of the broken window theory, or defense of it)

So enough with the common sense items. To get the official skinny, visit DSNY’s website. And new to the neighborhood and need to know your block’s collection days? Well then click here.

Raccoons are back in town!

Certainly all of us in the Greenwood Heights vicinity have had our share of encounters (or been told stores from friends/neighbors) with our furry tailed friends of the night. Well, it’s that time of the year again. While the raccoon population has already been active this summer, due to the mild winter, warm spring and hot (!) summer, they seem to be out in packs. Here’s a few good (well, not so good for us) shot’s from last night’s fiesta at 4:00am on 23rd St.

Due to the proximity to Green-Wood and Prospect Park, and the higher density of folks in the neighborhood, we have created a perfect environment for these critters. Continue reading
